Aqua - The Aqua mission, launched in May 2002, builds on NASA's long history
of studying the Earth and its atmosphere from the impressive perspective
of space. Amongst the aims are an integrated understanding of the Earth
system at present, an improved understanding of the prominent changes
the system has undergone in the past, and improved predictions regarding
how the system is likely to change in the future. [116kb PDF]

ASTER - The ASTER instrument measures cloud properties, vegetation index, surface
mineralogy, soil properties, surface temperature, and surface topography
for selected regions of the Earth. [340kb PDF]

Birth of a Large Iceberg in Pine Island Bay, Antarctica - This lithograph shows the break-off of a large tabular iceberg from
the Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica. This event occurred between
November 4th and 12th, 2001, and provides powerful evidence of rapid
changes underway in this area of Antarctica. The three images were
acquired by the vertical-viewing
(nadir) camera of the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR)
instrument aboard NASA’s Terra spacecraft. The dimensions of
the iceberg are approximately 42 kilometers by 17 kilometers (26
miles by 11 miles). [223kb PDF]

CERES - CERES measures the balance of solar energy received by the Earth and
the energy reflected and emitted back into space. Understanding the
energy coming into and going out of the Earth system is critical for
assessing whether scientists' models of global climate change are making
accurate predictions. This pair of images is the Terra mission's first
in an ongoing series of such measurements of our planet's changing
climate system. [264kb PDF]

Exploring Earth from Space: Lithograph Set and Instructional Materials - Shuttle astronauts and the EarthKAM program provide photos of our planet from the unique perspective of Earth orbit. They are an incredible resource that can enhance your student's studies of Earth and space science, geography, social studies, mathematics, and educational technologies.Ý This lithograph set contains an educators guide, student information and worksheets, and several Earth photos taken from the Space Shuttle. Recommended level: Grades 3-12.

Florida Fires — June 1998 - Satellites provide observation capability for monitoring different
fire characteristics such as fire susceptibility, active fires, burned
areas, smoke, and trace gases. Specifically, the images on the front
represent the detection of active fires and smoke associated with wildfires
in Florida during June 1998. [33KB PDF]

GRACE - Studying Earth's Gravity Field from Space - This lithograph displays the most accurate map to date of Earth's long wavelength gravity field and is the first version to be released by NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission. We call these maps gravity anomaly maps because they show us how much Earth's actual gravity field departs from "normal," as defined by a simplified mathematical gravity model that assumes the Earth is perfectly smooth and featureless. The maps reveal that the Earth is a restless, dynamic planet, both at its surface and deep within its interior. [1.2mb PDF]

Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) - The first NASA Earth System Science Pathfinder (ESSP) mission, launched
in March 2002, Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE). The
GRACE mission accurately maps variations in the Earth's gravity field
over it's 5-year lifetime and the resulting improvements in precision
of gravity measurements is expected to revolutionize our understanding
of key climatological phenomena. The GRACE mission has two identical
spacecraft flying about 220 kilometers apart in the same polar orbit
500 kilometers above the Earth. [308KB PDF]
