blue right-pointing arrow Remote Sensing Tutorial - A tutorial approach to learning about the role of space science and technology in monitoring the Earth's surface and atmosphere. As you work through the tutorial, you will come to understand how remote sensing is applied to studying the land, sea, and air making up the environments of our planet. Not only will you gain insight into past uses of aerial photography and space imagery as records of the Earth's geography as well as the future plans for more advanced monitoring systems, but you should develop skills in interpreting these visual displays and data sets both by direct inspection and by computer processing. blue right-pointing arrow Spaceborne Ocean Color Instruments - Spaceborne instruments, designed to make precise measurements of ocean color, are the best method available to estimate ocean productivity on the global scale. In 1978, the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) provided the first remote-sensing data from Earth orbit concerning worldwide phytoplankton distributions and patterns of surface productivity, yet the CZCS was only an experimental mission that operated on a limited schedule. After the failure of the CZCS in 1986, there were no other sources of ocean color data from spaceborne sensors until 1996, when several new ocean color instruments were placed into orbit. Even more orbiting ocean color sensors are planned, and these instruments may finally provide the data necessary to accurately quantify the global distribution and seasonal variability of life in the oceans. blue right-pointing arrow Studying the Earth's Environment from Space (SEES) - This site is organized in a modular style based on Earth science topics studied by scientists with environmental data collected by satellites. Currently, four modules are being developed. They are listed at the right. The Stratospheric Ozone and Global Land Vegetation modules are ready for use. SEE) http://See.gsfc.nasa.gov/ SEE focuses on enabling the use of NASA Earth science information and data for formal and informal education. This program develops educational products for high school and undergraduate educators and for students at these levels. It also works with organizations and individuals involved in informal education throughout the U.S. to jointly produce useful educational and public awareness materials that utilize NASA's Earth science knowledge and expertise. blue right-pointing arrow The Dynamic Earth - Discovery Science Center is an interactive science center with over 100 hands-on exhibits augmented by educational programming and materials providing learning opportunities for students, teachers, and family audiences. Interested parties should contact the Education Department or Group Bookings at (714) 542-2823. Contact: Janet Yamaguchi, Vice President, Education, Discovery Science Center, 2500 North Main Street, Santa Ana, CA 92705; Phone: (714) 542-2823; Fax: (714) 542-2828; Email: jyamaguchi@discoverycube.org (Added: 5-Feb-2001 Hits: 1439) [Spider search][grade levels: all]
blue right-pointing arrow The JASON Project - The JASON Foundation engages students in science and technology, and motivates and provides professional development opportunities for teachers through the use of advanced interactive telecommunications. JASON expeditions, targeted for grades 4-10, are supported by extensive teacher training and award-winning curriculum and Internet program, and feature live, interactive broadcasts through robotics, fiber optics, television production, computer science, and satellite communications. JASON programs are broadcast to 36 Primary Interactive Network Sites (PINS) throughout the United States and the world. JASON also provides live broadcasts of expeditions directly to classrooms and through streaming video on the Internet. NASA PINS include Ames Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, and Johnson Space Center. Programs focus on oceans, rainforests, extreme environments, volcanoes and exploration of inner and outer space. All programs focus on connecting students and teachers with researchers and scientists in the field. blue right-pointing arrow Virtual Nebraska - Virtual Nebraska (gateway to Nebraska Satellite, Space Shuttle, and Aircraft Imagery) is an on-line archive of satellite imagery and aerial photography that gives users the opportunity to view the State's landscape from unique perspectives (e.g., at infrared or microwave wavelengths). Additionally, this web site offers digital elevation data, learning activities, image-processing tools, historical "looks" at over 600 cities, and examples of how remotely sensed data can be used to solve problems. The remote sensing tutorial is impressive and very thorough. (Added: 22-May-1999 Hits: 878) [Spider search][grade levels: 9-12]
blue right-pointing arrow Virtually Hawaii - A guided tour of the islands that includes many air and ground photographs. There are also several tours of Kilauea Volcano that include remote sensing data and a multitude of interesting local features. Virtually Hawaii is one of several Internet projects funded by NASA's Information Infrastructure Technology and Applications (IITA) program, which is part of the High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) initiative. Virtually Hawaii is run through the Hawaii Space Grant Consortium, UH Manoa. a guided tour that includes many air and ground photographs.
